United for Democracy Welcomes Voto Latino TO COALITION calling on Congress to rein in extreme Supreme court

Following a devastating Supreme Court term that attacked affirmative action, LGBTQ+ rights, student debt cancellation and more – Voto Latino will join United for Democracy in calling on Congress to take immediate action

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, United for Democracy (UFD) — a nationwide campaign created to educate Americans about the impact that today’s Supreme Court is having on their lives, freedoms, and democracy — is proud to welcome Voto Latino to the growing coalition. As the nation’s premier Latinx voter registration organization that has registered over 1.4 million voters since 2004, Voto Latino will work with United for Democracy to expose how the Court has dismantled reproductive freedoms, voting rights, civil rights, educational equity, and core tenets of American democracy in pursuit of an extreme political agenda.

The campaign adds its newest member after another devastating Supreme Court term where extreme justices overturned long-standing precedents and shattered judicial norms in service of wealthy donors. Ahead of and throughout Congress’ next session, United for Democracy will call on Congress to take action and rein in this extreme Supreme Court.

United for Democracy is unprecedented in its size and scope, with over 120 partner organizations to date. With Voto Latino’s support, the campaign representing tens of millions of Americans will harness growing outrage to mobilize the American people, advocates, experts, and political leaders and demand that Congress rein in the Court.

“Voto Latino is thrilled to join the United For Democracy campaign. At a time when the future of our democracy is at stake, we must continue to work alongside organizations that are committed to advancing a future that is more equitable for everyone. The extremist majority on the Supreme Court continues to disregard precedent and erode the progress we’ve made across several generations without accountability,” said Voto Latino’s Founding President and CEO María Teresa Kumar. “We particularly understand the importance of countering the unchecked corruption of justices in the majority through comprehensive reforms that have widespread support nationwide and in Congress. We are determined to restore faith in our courts and develop the necessary guidelines to prevent extremists from continuing their efforts after spending years dismantling our rights across the board.”

“For nearly two decades, Voto Latino has been at the forefront of engaging young Latino voters — reaching over 1.4 million in just the last decade alone — and advancing their political power. Political power that this Supreme Court tries to erode.” said Stasha Rhodes, Campaign Director of United for Democracy. “Since Shelby County and Brnovich opened the floodgates to dangerous voter suppression bills, Voto Latino has faced new challenges in their organizing and met them head on. But the barriers to democracy shouldn’t be this high. We are grateful to work alongside Voto Latino in the fight to rein in the Court so that the sacred right to vote is protected.”

Founding members of United for Democracy include the American Federation of Teachers, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, League of Conservation Voters, Giffords, National Education Association, Fair Fight Action, SEIU, NARAL Pro-Choice America, MoveOn, NextGen America, Black Voters Matter Fund, Alliance for Justice, LUCHA, Texas Gun Sense, Action Together NEPA, Wisconsin Voices For Peace, UltraViolet, and more.
