Supreme Court’s Latest Move Undermines Voter Rights as Election Day Approaches

Washington, D.C. — With less than a week until Election Day the MAGA justices on the U.S. Supreme Court has stepped in to allow Virginia officials to conduct a highly questionable and last minute purge of its voter rolls in violation of the National Voter Registration Act. Following this ruling, Republicans are now urging the justices to intervene in Pennsylvania over provisional ballots, which could disenfranchise tens of thousands of voters.

United for Democracy Executive Director Stasha M. Rhodes issued the following statement in response:

“As we approach Election Day, Virginia voters face an unprecedented threat to their freedom to vote, courtesy of the MAGA-backed justices on the U.S. Supreme Court. By stepping in to allow Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s 11th hour voter purge, these justices have exposed their willingness to silence voices, trample over existing safeguards, and disregard our right to an equal say in our future.

“The playbook is clear: MAGA Republicans are determined to undermine democracy and hand this election to Donald Trump by any means necessary. This decision to purge eligible voters is part of an effort by MAGA justices who have already stripped away our freedom to decide what happens to our bodies, ruled Trump immune from criminal conduct, and now threaten to veto votes in Virginia.

“This election, the Supreme Court itself is on the ballot. The decisions made in Virginia and in recent years reveal a growing disregard for the rights of voters and the integrity of our electoral process. Together, we have fought back against similar attacks before, and we will continue to stand for an America where our votes count, our voices are heard, and our will prevails. ‘We the people’ decide our leaders, not partisans in robes who are hostile to democracy.”
