Supreme Court Abandons Rule of Law By Agreeing to Hear Trump’s Immunity Case

The Court’s MAGA majority delays Trump’s criminal trials, threatening to push them past Election Day.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Yesterday, the Supreme Court decided to consider Donald Trump’s baseless immunity claim following his extreme efforts to overturn the 2020 election results and undermine our democracy yet again. In response, Stasha Rhodes, Campaign Director of United for Democracy — a coalition of 130+ state and national organizations calling on Congress to fix the broken Supreme Court — issued the following statement:

“Last night, the Supreme Court’s MAGA majority handed Donald Trump a significant victory that will allow him to further delay accountability for the crimes he committed as president. Despite a unanimous and bipartisan lower court ruling, long standing legal precedents, and basic common sense, the Supreme Court’s MAGA supermajority has shamelessly decided to hear whether Trump can still claim absolute immunity for acts he carried out in office. This decision will further delay Trump’s criminal trials, making it more likely he can run out the clock as we head deeper into the 2024 election.

Our constitution, and our justice system, is built upon a single idea: no person – even a former president – is above the rule of law. If we hope to secure the foundation of American principles, we must repair that core value. We need Congress–which has already waited too long to enforce its oversight powers– to move quickly to rein in the Supreme Court before it’s too late.”
