Eliminating the Filibuster for Roe Is a Necessary Step Towards Taking Power Back from the Corrupt Supreme Court
Madison, WI — This morning, in an interview with Wisconsin Public Radio, Vice President Kamala Harris reaffirmed her support for reproductive rights and said that she supports eliminating the filibuster to codify Roe v. Wade.
United for Democracy Executive Director Stasha Rhodes issued the following statement in response:
“This is a critical commitment from Vice President Harris and a strong sign of what we could see to restore our rights and freedoms in a Harris administration. Two years ago, the MAGA majority on the Supreme Court took away a cornerstone of Americans’ freedom by overturning Roe v. Wade. This decision, which Donald Trump has taken credit for and bragged about, allowed states to enact draconian abortion bans that have forced women to travel out of state for care, inflicted harsh penalties on women seeking care and doctors providing it, and led to a shocking uptick in deaths as women are denied the care they need.
The decision to overturn Roe v. Wade was made by an undemocratic Supreme Court majority — and legislation to reinstate it is being held back by an undemocratic Senate maneuver. We should be clear: There will be no undoing the damage this MAGA Court has done without addressing the broken Senate and its antidemocratic filibuster. Eliminating the filibuster to restore Roe would be a necessary step in taking power back from an unaccountable Supreme Court and restoring our freedom to decide what happens to our bodies.”
