UNITED FOR DEMOCRACY: Justice Alito is Wrong, Congress Must Intervene in Compromised Supreme Court
Justice Alito’s recent comments showcase an increasingly radical perspective from right-wing justices that the Court should remain untouchable and unaccountable to the American people
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, United for Democracy (UFD) — a nationwide campaign created to educate Americans about the impact that today’s Supreme Court is having on their lives, freedoms, and democracy — doubled down on its calls for Congress to rein in the Supreme Court after Justice Samuel Alito inaccurately asserted that, “[There is] no provision in the Constitution that gives [Congress] the authority to regulate the Supreme Court”. Alito’s opinions were lauded in a Wall Street Journal article written by a lawyer who has business before the Court.
Stasha Rhodes, Campaign Director of United for Democracy, issued the following statement:
“Justice Alito’s extreme claim that Congress has no role in overseeing the Supreme Court is absolutely wrong and underscores the need for immediate congressional intervention. It couldn’t be any clearer: The Supreme Court is compromised, and Justice Alito is a big part of the problem.
“Justice Alito is desperate to avoid any scrutiny of a Supreme Court that is now completely captured by the wealthy and well-connected, but Congress doesn't have to listen quietly while extreme justices announce they are above the laws the Congress writes and that the Court should protect.
“Our constitution gave Congress the authority to establish funding, rules, and regulations around Supreme Court operations. We operate on a system of checks and balances – that has been a mainstay of the American democratic system since its founding. For Justice Alito to fully ignore that truth shows just how broken this Court is. We need reform now.”
Earlier this month, United for Democracy led 90 groups in a letter to Congress calling for investigations, hearings, and action to address the broken Supreme Court. The Coalition will keep mobilizing for immediate Congressional action.
