Trump Thinks the Courts Work for Him Because Most of the Time, They Do
After Attacking the Judiciary, Trump Turns On His Billionaire Backers When a Federalist Society Judge Steps Out of Line
Washington, D.C. — Yesterday, President Trump went on social media to criticize Leonard Leo and the Federalist Society for recommending the judges to the U.S. Court of International Trade who recently ruled against his tariffs. In his post, Trump condemned Leo for openly bragging that “he controls Judges, and even Justices of the United States Supreme Court.” But in reality, Trump is upset not because Leo and the Federalist Society play too large a role in the judicial system but because he believes the courts should rule in his favor 100% of the time.
“Leonard Leo and the Federalist Society have spent decades installing judges to do their bidding from the bench. But anything short of 100% loyalty is unacceptable to Donald Trump, so it’s no surprise that he’s lashing out,” said United for Democracy Senior Advisor Meagan Hatcher-Mays. “From the Supreme Court down, the MAGA right has handpicked judges and justices to support their agenda. Of course Trump thinks there’s no limit to what he is able to get away with, because most of the time, there’s not.”
Leo and the Federalist Society have been openly meddling in the courts and installing far-right ideologues to do their bidding for decades. But now, after a single ruling against him, Trump is turning on the entire right-wing legal project with demands that the courts support his every move, regardless of the law. His crusade against the judicial system began with firings and threats of impeachment, and now, he is designating his onetime allies and co-conspirators as enemies of the state — not because they’re exerting undue influence over our democracy but because they’re not subservient enough.
