UNITED FOR DEMOCRACY WELCOMES COMMON CAUSE TO COALITION FIGHTING TO FIX THE COURT AND GIVE POWER BACK TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, United for Democracy (UFD) — a nationwide Coalition shining a spotlight on the Supreme Court’s impact on our freedoms and the urgent need for Congress to use its authority to fix it — announced the addition of Common Cause to its growing membership.

Representing tens of millions of Americans, United For Democracy is unprecedented in its size and scope. With Common Cause’s partnership and over five decades of leadership, the 160 member-Coalition gains a key champion in the work to defend and pursue the promises of democracy.

“At this inflection point for our country, we welcome Common Cause to our Coalition,” said Stasha Rhodes, Executive Director, United For Democracy. “MAGA operatives know the overwhelming majority of Americans oppose their dangerous, special interest and corporate billionaire-backed agenda so they spent decades capturing the Supreme Court to subvert the will of the people. And their MAGA justices have delivered on taking a sledgehammer to democracy: Empowering dictatorship by suppressing the vote and giving Trump the protections and powers of a king. As the stakes rise, we are grateful to face them side-by-side with Common Cause, a critical leader at the forefront of protecting the vote. Together, we will return power back to the American people.”

“Common Cause has a long history of working to hold the Supreme Court accountable, and we are proud to join the United for Democracy coalition in fighting to reform a Court that has quite simply gone off the rails, pushing its extreme agenda that hurts women, families, communities, workers, our environment, and our democracy,” said Virginia Kase Solomón, President and CEO of Common Cause. “Any Court that ignores clear conflicts of interest of its Justices and decides that a sitting president is above the law has quite simply lost its way. Supreme Court approval ratings have plummeted as Americans have continually endured a majority of Justices regularly ignoring precedent to push its extreme agenda on the nation. It is once again time for The People to join arms to bring about desperately needed reforms.”

Common Cause joins United For Democracy as the Court’s approval rating falls to a record low and support for reform gains powerful new momentum. At the end of July, President Biden announced his historic proposal to fix the Supreme Court, centering Supreme Court reform on the national stage and setting the expectation that this bold action will be a priority in the next governing opportunity, potentially as early as 2025.
